Back Pain Treatment: How a Chiropractor Can Help You

BACK PAIN TREATMENT: HOW A CHIROPRACTOR CAN HELP YOU

When a person is suffering from back pain, whether chronic or occasional, they can end up sacrificing a lot of enjoyment from their life. This may include decreased production at work, loss of sleep, not enjoying social activities, and even strain on relationships with loved ones. Back pain affects 8 out of 10 people at some point in their lives. This causes not only physical pain but may also cause emotional problems as well. In fact, finding ways to manage low back pain and secondary health concerns effectively is imperative.

Different conditions can cause back pain, including strained muscles, sprained ligaments, injuries of the discs, obesity, arthritis, psychological stress, sports injuries, and accidents. This pain can prevent you from participating in fun activities with friends and family, such as playing your favorite sport, picking up the kids at home, or avoiding time in the car because it causes an increase in low back pain. With the recent rise in opioid addiction and deaths, many people are now looking for safer more conservative measures such as chiropractic care to manage and treat their low back pain. For these reasons mentioned above chiropractic care continues to become increasingly popular today as an effective and non-invasive way of treating back pain. This is also considered a safe means for the treatment of back pain.

At Carolina ChiroCare and Rehab a Chiropractor we offer targeted, gentle and specific methods for treating your back pain. The general principles of chiropractic care are to restore spine movement and mobility. When the spine does not move as it should, it can cause back pain, joint stiffness, and dysfunction. Chiropractors adjust the spine as a means to correct spinal fixations, relieve pain, improve alignment, treat disc injuries, and promote general health.

How a Chiropractor Treats Back Pain

Depending on your diagnosis some different techniques may be chosen by your chiropractic physician.

Flexion-distraction technique

This is a gentle type of non-surgical spinal decompression traction technique. This treatment is done by utilizing a specialized table to assist the Chiropractor. This is especially useful for the treatment of herniated and bulging discs, degenerated discs or degenerative disc disease, chronic arthritis, and spinal stenosis. This treatment and technology have been used in health care since the 1950s and we currently have two Flexion-Distraction treatment tables at Carolina ChiroCare and Rehab.

Specific spinal manipulation…What Is It?

Sometimes referred to as spinal adjustments, spinal manipulation is hands-on mobilization care that restores the spine movement and mobility. With this, the muscles relax, joints regain mobility and the pain is decreased. The chiropractor identifies joint abnormalities through your examination and X-rays. Then he restores the spinal joint mobility with a gentle thrusting technique into the spine or specialized machine.

More Treatment Techniques Chiropractors Use to Treat Back Pain

Instrument-assisted manipulation

This is a non-thrusting technique. The chiropractor uses a handheld instrument by applying a specific force into the vertebral joint without manually thrusting his hands into the spine. This is especially appropriate in older patients with osteoporosis or patients who may be intimidated by hearing their spine crack. At Carolina ChiroCare and Rehab we currently offer Activator Method® treatment and Arthrostim instrument-assisted chiropractic adjustments.

To treat your back pain, chiropractic can use a variety of manual therapies. These are used to treat soft tissue injuries (ligaments and muscles, for example). some manual therapies this office currently provides are

Targeted Manuel Therapy/Myofascial Release Therapy

This treatment is to restore the proper functioning of the muscle that behaves abnormally. Inflamed or injured muscles that contain these abnormal areas may be injured, irritated, inflamed, hyper-contracted, locked, and cannot function normally. This causes restriction of motion, stiffness, and even chronic pain. This treatment allows the muscle contracture to be released to normal length and also improves circulation.

Trigger Point Therapy

A chiropractor identifies painful "knots" and tender points in muscles and then applies direct pressure at those points to ease tension and resolve the trigger points.

Back pain can be treated with targeted chiropractic care. Chiropractors at Carolina ChiroCare and Rehab we specialize and focus on a comprehensive diagnostic approach to stop chronic and acute back pain.
