Chiropractors receive extensive training in treating athletes and sports injuries. Dr. Gerdes has studied extensively under the American College of Sports Medicine or ACSM. He holds a bachelor’s degree in exercise science and health and has helped athletes ranging from professional baseball players, college football players, professional mixed martial arts fighters, avid runners and weight lifters.
Sports injuries may range from tendonitis and muscle soreness often seen in runners to more serious injuries such a ligament tears or herniated discs. Chiropractors focus care on the musculoskeletal system so choosing chiropractic care after a sports injury can be a great choice. Many of the top athletes in the world use chiropractic care:
All but one of the 32 teams in the National Football League (NFL) utilize the services of a chiropractor as part of the triage in managing and preventing injuries. (Only one team does not publicly admit to using chiropractic care — the Oakland Raiders.)
Professional Athlete Testimonials
– Michael Jordan 6 time NBA Champion (could have been 9 in a row), MVP
“I didn’t know how much I could improve until I started seeing a chiropractor. Since I’ve been in chiropractic, I’ve improved by leaps and bounds, both mentally and physically.”
– Tom Brady
New England Patriots QB, 3 -Time Super Bowl Champion, 2 – Time Super Bowl MVP
“Chiropractic just makes you feel so much better. When I walk out of the clinic, I feel like I’m about three inches taller and everything’s in place. And as long as I see the chiropractor, I feel like I’m one step ahead of the game.”
– Emmitt Smith
NFL All-Time Rushing Leader, 3 Time Super Bowl Champion, ‘93, ‘94 & ‘96 1994 NFL & Super Bowl MVP
“Deep-tissue massage and chiropractic, are now common treatments around the league. I started doing this about four or five years ago. I believe that what I’m doing is what helps me go on. I think Warren Moon, ( Seattle ‘s 41 year old quarter back) does the same thing. So I’ve become a big believer in servicing my body and making sure it is lined up properly and functioning the way it is supposed to on Sunday. I go see my chiropractor when I get bent out of shape on Sundays. Playing in a football game is like being in 30-40 car accidents.” Smith credits his chiropractic doctor with helping to supply the longevity that allowed him to achieve his records.
– Arnold Schwarzenegger
Governor of California 7 Time Mr. Olympia Actor President’s Council on Physical Fitness
“I am very fortunate to have, so-to-speak, my in-house chiropractor, Dr. Franco Colombu, as my own personal chiropractor. So, I visit Franco regularly, and he comes over to my house. He adjusts my wife, my kids, and me, whether we have pain or just want to stay healthy. And we always feel great when Franco leaves. Even when I have athletic injuries he’s always there for me, and helps me. So it’s really terrific, and I know that first hand. That’s why I always will be traveling around, all over the world, talking highly about the profession of chiropractic. You chiropractic doctors are really miracle workers, and that’s why it’s really great to have you here, part of the Arnold Classic. Because, like I said, the Arnold Classic and Fitness Weekend are about health and about fitness and preventive care.”
– Jerry Rice
“My first experience with chiropractic care was right before the 49ers were to play the Cincinnati Bengals in Super Bowl XXIII in 1987,” said Rice in the promotional video. “A couple of our key players were injured and a chiropractor turned things around. I quickly became a believer and ever since, I have had the benefit of chiropractic care.”
“Football is a very rough and vigorous sport,” said Rice in the video. “Many of the pass patterns in a game – either long or short – required a maximum effort. I took some vicious hits from players nearly twice my size.Thankfully, I had the durability to withstand these tackles – or I would never have succeeded or lasted as long as I did. Chiropractic was the key to keeping me in the game.”
“Dancing with the Stars was every bit as exhausting and challenging – though not nearly as brutal as football,” said Rice in the video. “It required many hours of practice. I had aches and pains that I never had before. Again, chiropractic made the difference – and kept me dancing and in competition.”
